Luxury at a Fair Price — A Sushi Izakaya Open from 6 AM to Midnight: Zeishokuya Senju

Zeishokuya Senju is a sushi izakaya in Kita-ku, Nagoya, a three-minute walk from Kurokawa subway station. Its
motto is luxury at a fair price, and it is a popular place where sushi, kaisendon and sashimi made from fish
swimming in the in-house tank can be enjoyed from 6:00 in the morning until midnight.
Here we introduce the
allure of Zeishokuya Senju.

Seasonal fish bought in every morning is kept in the tank inside the restaurant and served while still fresh. Each
piece the chefs prepare is generously sized, and the range runs well beyond nigiri to rolls, gunkan, seared sushi
and even meat sushi. With prices from ¥160 a piece, you can also order your favorite toppings one piece at a
time.

Above all there is the sheer breadth of the opening hours: every day except Tuesday the doors open at 6:00 in the
morning and stay open until midnight. Breakfast, a morning drink, lunch, an afternoon drink, dinner or a second
stop after another bar — it answers every occasion. And if you happen to catch the irregularly held “Senju
Time," when staff carry fish from the tank around the tables and sell them on the spot, the day becomes all the
more memorable.

The open, airy interior holds many tables seating two to six, and the layout can be rearranged for groups. The
counter seats, a favorite among regulars, face a display case, so you can watch the fish in the tank while you
eat.
Counting 60 seats in the main building and 40 in the annex, there are 100 seats in all. For a large
party, the annex next door can be booked whole from 30 guests, while smaller groups can use the private room in
the main building from ten. There is no car park, but the restaurant partners with nearby coin parking and gives
one parking voucher with ¥3,000 or more spent on food and drink. From drinking alone or a date through to group
bookings, it is an easy place to use.

Review by Zeishokuya Senju

  • What is especially good is the ara-jiru. It is full of fish and the red miso is rich, so I end up having
    bowl after bowl.
  • Most morning spots in Nagoya serve toast and Japanese-style breakfasts are surprisingly rare, so for
someone like me who prefers rice, a place like this is very welcome.
  • I went with a reservation. The table had been properly held for us and we were shown in right away.
